Your telegram 22nd January. As regards recog-
nition of Nationalist Government please see Foreign
Office telegram to Peking No.424 to which it does not
seem possible to add anything.
With reference to Foreign Office telegram No.36,
your valuable observations are much appreciated by His
Majesty's Government but they do not feel able to answer
in detail as all questions of detail must depend on pro-
gress of negotiations in accordance with general policy
which has been amounced. Full consideration hasbeen
and will be given to all the points which you raise, and
you will, I am sure, realise that the utmost will continue
to be done by His Majesty's Government to conserve all
reasonable rights and privileges of British subjects in
the very difficult circumstances. They fully appreciate
in particular, the importance of question of Anglo-Chinese
and a reasonable arrangement will, it is hoped, be come to
about the Chinese law of nationality somewhat on the
lines you suggest.
AMERY.
